Can an Apple Watch screen be replaced?

The short answer

Yes. On most Apple Watch models the cover glass is bonded to the display beneath it, so a cracked screen is fixed by fitting a new display assembly rather than new glass alone. The rest of the watch, including the battery, the sensors on the back and the strap mechanism, stays as it is. Apple's own out-of-warranty service usually exchanges the whole watch instead, which is why an independent screen repair often costs less.

Glass or display: what has actually broken

If the picture is clean under the crack and touch still works, the damage is in the glass, but because the glass and the display come as one bonded part on most models, the repair is the same: a new display assembly.

If there are lines, a green or black area, or touch that ignores parts of the screen, the display itself is damaged. That is the same repair too, and it is worth doing before the cracked glass lets moisture reach the inside of the watch.

What Apple charges in India

Apple India's repair price estimator lists two out-of-warranty fees for Apple Watch, and neither is a screen fee: battery service, which is ₹11,900 on every model, and "other damage", which depends on the model. These are the figures it showed on 11 October 2026.

Other damage is ₹24,900 to ₹25,900 for an Apple Watch SE with GPS and ₹28,900 with GPS + Cellular. It is ₹40,900 for an aluminium Series 6 to Series 12 with GPS and ₹47,900 with GPS + Cellular. Stainless steel, Hermès and titanium models up to Series 11 are ₹52,900, and the Series 12 titanium and Hermès are ₹58,900. The Ultra, Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 and the titanium Edition Series 6 and 7 are ₹66,900, the Ultra 4 is ₹73,900 and the Series 12 Ceramic is ₹79,900. The estimator does not list Series 5 or older.

Apple's conditions apply: Apple inspects the watch before setting the final fee, the fee may be subject to tax, a delivery fee may be added if the watch is sent in, and Apple Authorised Service Providers can set their own fees. An independent repair replaces the display assembly alone, and the written quote gives the price for your exact model before anything is opened.

How the screen comes off

An Apple Watch has no screws on the outside. The display is held by adhesive and released with heat and a thin blade, which is why a watch is opened carefully: the display's cables sit close to the edge, and on many models a battery sits directly underneath.

The engineer tells you at diagnosis whether your watch can be done at your door or goes to the Sector 49 bench, and the written quote states the price for your exact model before anything is opened.

Water resistance afterwards

Opening the watch breaks its factory seal. New adhesive goes on with the new display, but no repair outside the factory can promise the original water resistance, so treat a repaired watch as splash-resistant and keep it out of the pool and the shower.

Before you book

  • Note the model and case size: in the Watch app on the paired iPhone, My Watch, General, About.
  • Turn off Activation Lock only if asked to; the engineer does not need your Apple ID password.
  • If the screen is lifting off the case, stop charging the watch: a swelling battery can push it up.
  • Keep the strap: it comes off before the repair and goes back on after.
