Why does my iPhone say “Unknown Part” after a repair?

The short answer

Because iOS could not verify the part as a genuine Apple part paired to your phone. On recent iPhones, Settings lists each replaced screen, battery and camera under Parts and Service History, and a part Apple's system did not pair shows as Unknown Part. The phone keeps working. What can change is a feature tied to that part: True Tone on a screen, or the Battery Health reading on a battery.

Where the message comes from

Open Settings, then General, then About. On recent iPhones a Parts and Service History section appears once a screen, battery or camera has been replaced, and each part is listed as Genuine Apple Part or Unknown Part. Apple also shows a notification for a short time after the repair.

Unknown Part means Apple's system could not confirm the part, not that the phone is broken. An aftermarket part shows it, and so can a genuine Apple part that was fitted without Apple's pairing step.

What actually changes

For a screen, True Tone stops adjusting the colour to the room unless the original screen's data is carried over, and touch, brightness and Face ID should otherwise work as before. For a battery, the Battery Health percentage may stop showing, so you lose the number but not the battery. For a camera, the photos are what tell you whether the part is good.

The message stays in the history for the life of the phone, so anyone buying it second-hand will see that the part was replaced.

Can it be avoided?

Only with a genuine Apple part paired through Apple's own process. On recent models running a recent iOS, Apple's Repair Assistant can finish that pairing for genuine parts, and a part that passes it is listed as genuine.

iFixpert names the part grade on the written quote before anything is opened, so you know in advance whether the phone will show the message, and the engineer checks True Tone and Battery Health with you after the repair.

What to check after any screen or battery repair

  • Settings, General, About, Parts and Service History: which parts are listed, and how.
  • True Tone in Control Centre, by pressing and holding the brightness slider.
  • Settings, Battery, Battery Health: whether a percentage still shows.
  • Face ID, by locking the phone and unlocking it once.
