How can I tell if my iPhone screen has been replaced with a fake one?

The short answer

Open Settings, then General, then About, and look at the Display row: a note flagging an unknown or non-genuine part is the fastest tell. Then check the panel itself. Blacks that glow grey, a colder white, brightness that will not climb, a missing True Tone toggle and a lifted edge all point the same way. Ghost touches or dead touch near the frame do too.

What the phone itself tells you

Open Settings, then General, then About, and scroll to the Display row. A message there about an unknown or non-genuine part means the panel is not the one your handset shipped with. If no Display row appears at all, your model or iOS version does not report parts history, and the physical checks below are what you have.

Treat that as one input rather than the verdict. Look at whether the True Tone toggle is still in Display and Brightness: if it went missing after the repair, something changed about the panel that went in.

What you can see and feel

Open a full black image in a dark room. A Compatible copy standing in for an OLED tends to glow dark grey instead of going black. Compare a white screen against another iPhone of the same model and watch for a blue or yellow cast. Push brightness to maximum outdoors and see whether it keeps up.

Ghost touches, a strip near the bezel that ignores your thumb, sluggish scrolling, a panel sitting proud of the frame, or a gap that catches your fingernail all point at a low-grade panel and a rushed reassembly.

What to ask the shop that fitted it

Ask for the bill or quote to name the parts grade, and ask for the panel that came out. A line that reads only screen replaced does not say what went in, and a shop that will not name the grade afterwards was not naming it before either. iFixpert publishes what it shows you and hands back before any work, which is a fair benchmark to hold any shop to.

If you already have a fake panel

Book a doorstep visit and say what was fitted and by whom. Screen replacement is done at your address, and iFixpert diagnoses free and quotes the replacement in writing with the grade named. If the fault turns out to sit in the Face ID hardware or elsewhere on the board, that is microscope work and it goes to the Sector 49 lab rather than your door. iFixpert tells you which of the two it is before you approve anything.
