Why are two repair shops quoting me different prices for the same screen?
The short answer
Almost always because the two shops are quoting different parts. OEM, OLED and Compatible (also called Copy) panels sit at different price points, and a shop that does not name the grade can quote whatever it likes. Ask both shops to write the grade, the warranty term and what happens if you decline. iFixpert names the parts grade on every written quote.
OEM, OLED and Compatible: what the grades mean
OEM, OLED and Compatible are the grades iFixpert quotes on, and Compatible is also sold as Copy. They differ in brightness, colour, touch response and how long they hold up. A cheap quote is usually a Compatible panel. An expensive one is usually OEM or OLED. Neither shop is lying about the price. They are describing different parts.
Shops use their own names for these grades, so ask which of the three a name maps to. Two quotes are only comparable once both name a grade.
What else moves the price
Your exact model. Panel supply runs model by model, and for older or budget handsets a matching panel is not always available. iFixpert confirms the panel for your model before a visit is booked, so the quote you accept is a quote for your device.
The work behind the panel. Some displays cannot be swapped at your door and have to come to the Sector 49 bench. A screen that cracked because the board or the charging circuit took a hit is a different job again.
What the quote should name before you agree
iFixpert writes the parts grade on the quote next to the price, and the warranty term that goes with that grade. What happens if you decline, and what happens to the panel that comes out, is set out on the iFixpert promise page.
Ask each shop these five things
- Which grade is this price for: OEM, OLED or Compatible.
- Is the price fixed and in writing before work starts.
- What is the warranty term on this specific grade, and is it on paper.
- Do I pay anything if I look at the quote and say no.
- Will you show me the part in its packaging and hand back the old one.
