My iPhone screen is black but it still rings and vibrates. Is the screen dead?

The short answer

The display is probably dead, but the phone behind it is not. Ringing and vibrating tell you iOS has booted and the board, the battery and the taptic engine are all working, so only the picture is missing. Three faults take the picture away: the display module, the connector it plugs into, and the backlight circuit on the logic board. A new screen fixes the first two, not the third.

Force restart before anything else

Press volume up and release, press volume down and release, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. If the picture comes back, nothing was dead. iOS had crashed with the backlight off, and that is software rather than a part. If it has been on charge for half an hour and a restart still leaves it black, treat it as hardware.

Two of the three are fixed at your door

A failed display module and a torn connector are both module work, so an iFixpert engineer does that at your address in Gurgaon or Delhi NCR. A dead backlight circuit is not module work. It is soldering on the logic board under magnification, which is lab work in Sector 49. The free 21-point diagnosis names which of the three you have, before the phone is opened.

What not to do while the screen is dark

Stop entering your passcode blind. Each wrong attempt locks the phone for longer, and enough of them lock it out for good, and the only way back in then is to erase it. That turns a display repair into lost photos. Use a headset or Siri to take calls until the picture is back.

Keep it out of your pocket and out of a tight case. If the panel has lifted or the connector tore in a drop, squeezing and flexing it makes the damage travel, and damage that reaches the board is a bigger job.

How to tell which of the three it is

  • In a dark room, tilt the phone under a bright lamp. A faint ghost of the lock screen means the panel still works and the backlight does not.
  • Plug it into a computer it has been connected to before. If it shows up there, iOS is running and the fault sits on the display side.
  • A black screen that arrived with a drop points at the connector or the module. One that faded in over days points at the panel.
  • Any contact with water puts the board in the frame, whatever the screen is doing.
  • None of these separates a torn connector from a failed module. Opening the phone does, and it is a screen job either way.
